3 Simple Potions

Since I was a munchkin I have loved concocting potions. As an artist I see it as yet another medium of expressing creative energy. As an Earth Actionist I see it as a way of deepening my connection with nature. I have come to understand that I have always been a Good Witch at heart. It started with me trying to concoct things to help others at a young age, I have always found it easier to care-take others than to care-take myself.

When I look back at my childhood through early adulthood I was often ill or injured. My greatest sickness was something I like to call TGS (Tough Guy Syndrome). The major symptom of this is not being able to admit it when I wasn’t feeling well because I viewed being sick, injured or having emotions as a form of weakness. I know… I know... this is absolutely absurd but that was where I was at. Today I am happy to report that I view things very differently.

It began at birth being strangled by the umbilical cord then shortly after coming down with Scarlet Fever followed by chronic ear infections, chronic strep throat and strange unknown rashes. As I got older I greatly suffered from Ulcerative Colitis. On top of all of this I was extremely rough on my body, through sports and adrenaline seeking activities I often injured myself. My knees took the brunt of it. As I have aged I have found great insight and joy in diving deeper into where these illnesses and tendencies come from and how to heal them emotionally, mentally, physically and naturally. Along the way I have found many reliable plant allies and have learned how to be my own best caretaker. Here are my 3 favorite very easy concoctions that I trust to be potent and beneficial in times of need and for simple maintenance.

#1

Ginger/Turmeric Anti-Inflammatory Elixir

This one is a simple concentrate. I loosely use a 2:1 ratio Ginger:Tumeric.

  • Peel and cut about 4in. Ginger Root and 2in. Turmeric Root.

  • Place in a pot with 2 cups water.

  • Heat to just under boil then reduce heat to simmer for 10 min.

  • Cool to room temperature then store in a mason jar in the fridge.

I take little swigglets of this when needed or dilute it with warm water with a tsp. of raw, organic, local honey as a delicious cup of tea.

#2

Strong Ass Mint Tea for Digestive Ease

I use whatever I have around, be it fresh mint from the garden (about 12 leaves), dried mint in the winter (about 2 TBSP.) or organic tea bags (2 bags).

  • Heat water just below boil.

  • Pour over a tea ball or infusor with your fresh or dried mint or your 2 tea bags.

  • Let step for at least 5 min and enjoy.

#3

ACV & Honey Throat Savior

Simple as 1, 2, 3.

  1. 8 ounces warm water

  2. 1 TBSP. Apple Cider Vinegar

  3. 1 TBSP. Raw, organic, local honey.

Combine and enjoy.

If you are looking to connect more with the healing magic of nature I highly recommend this book, The Green Witch by Arin Murphy-Hiscock. It has tons of perspective, tips and insights.
